JJ, the Third-Grader Who Gave His Birthday to the Streets

Real Stories. Real People. Radical Love.

In a New York classroom, 9-year-old JJ was asked how he planned to spend his birthday. But JJ had already made a different plan. He took the money he received for gifts and instead asked his mom to buy food and supplies for people living on the streets.

That weekend, he and his mother packed up meals and care kits and handed them out personally in their neighborhood. He gave out socks, sandwiches, and big smiles. A teacher who filmed it said, “JJ didn’t ask for attention—he just said, ‘I want them to feel loved on my birthday.’”

In a time when many children are focused on what they receive, JJ’s example reminds us of what it means to truly give.
